19th Century Old State United West

The Jews of the West 1550-1815: Sex, Liberty and License in the Eighteenth Century by Lionel Kochan,

The Jews of the West 1550-1815: Sex, Liberty and License in the Eighteenth Century by Lionel Kochan,
In a broad sweep from central Europe to Ireland and from the 16th to the early 19th century, this unusual work puts the Jewish community and its rabbinic and "lay" leaders at the center of Jewish history. Of surpassing value is Kochan's treatment of the community not only as a religious but also as a political unit. It shows the community at grips with the Reformation and the introduction of the ghetto system in the Italian states. Kochan's analysis of the clash of interests between the few wealthy and the multitude of poor Jews raises doubts about the whole notion of "community." The later chapters critically examine the policy of emancipation as pursued by the Jewish leadership in France and the German and Italian states during the wars of the French revolution and the Napoleonic period. This section discusses the failure of Jewish diplomacy at the Congress of Vienna. A final chapter expounds the emergence of Orthodoxy in terms of the tumultuous changes in Jewish society over these two centuries.

Reopening the Western Frontier by Ed Marston,
Reopening the Western Frontier by Ed Marston,
When Frederick Jackson Turner declared the Western frontier closed in 1890, the Western way of life had been firmly established. Rural and small town life were dominant, and the economy was tied to the mining, farming, and ranching of the land. Unlike other parts of the United States, deep change came slowly to the West, especially the rural west, which retained many of its 19th-century roots. Now, with the decline of the West's natural resource economics - oil and gas, uranium, mining, and ranching - change is proceeding rapidly. As in the homestead era, the West is again open to resettlement. What will replace the old industries and way of life, and what forces for change will shape the future. Reopening the Western Frontier documents these dramatic changes that lie ahead. Some of the West's most astute and informed observers contributed to this book, originally created by the editors of High Country News, the award winning newspaper based in Colorado.
